Art Deco Bathroom
This Brisbane bathroom renovation delights with its nod to art deco design and monochromatic palette.
The Gap, West Brisbane
Upon entering this 1970’s two storey brick home in Brisbane’s west, it was easy to see our clients’ incredible skill in bringing a stylish mid-century look and feel to their home. There was an immediate warm invitation to come on in and make yourself comfortable. The bathroom, having never been touched, was in much need of it’s first renovation and there was an obvious drawcard to incorporating a mid-century feel to the space. When considering how to design your bathroom layout, function should be at the forefront. Design and style can be incorporated through selections once the bathroom design has been completed. In this home, there is only the one bathroom. Therefore, it was considered essential to retain the separate toilet and bathroom concept.
Following consultation with Pete and Rebecca, interior designer, our client was able to confirm and feel confident in her wanting to keep with a monochromatic black and white palette for all selections. The focus was on the wow factor black penny round flooring, our clients’ main wish for the space. By choosing a simple 100 x 200mm white subway for the wall tile, the flooring remained the focus. By laying the wall tile on the vertical in brick bond, the art deco inspiration was retained. A lightly darker grout created symmetry with the floor tiles. The introduction of an inset bath allowed the classic approach of further tiling in and a lower line and level of the subway tile.
The colour palette was set off with chrome tap ware in a classic gooseneck style with delicate finishes, settling the space and bringing femininity into the bathroom. The mid – century form was followed with the simple chrome framed vanity base, covered in a clean, porcelain white vanity top, its subtlety in style the perfect touch of finesse. A simple shaver cabinet sits perfectly against the subways – as with most bathrooms, we prefer a shaver cabinet to be slightly more narrow than the vanity to ensure it does not overtake the area. In the case here it was even more necessary given the basin didn’t house cabinetry underneath. The introduction of the black wall lights allowed for the eye to have a space at height to sit for a black accessory and balance the black penny round tile flooring.
Dressing the space in bold golden yellow bathroom linens allows the necessary injection of colour to set off the craftsmanship of the space, the plant a point of contact for the calming of the area.
Overall, this bathroom’s layout and carefully built space has paid homage to the rest of the home and is fit to host a beautiful family.
